The Parsons Police Department (PPD) is a full-service law enforcement agency serving our community since 1870. PPD works in concert with other local, state and federal agencies to ensure the safety and security of our growing and dynamic city. Parsons is the regional retail trade center for a multi-county area encompassing rural SE Kansas. The community is comprised of 10,000 residents, is home of Labette Community College (LCC), a Level 3 Trauma Center with helicopter based Life Flight services is available at the 99-bed Labette Health Center, the community has a rich history with the KATY (Now Union Pacific RR). Housing is very affordable and the City's Economic Development Office has been instrumental in drawing living wage employers to town. The agency is currently staffed by 26 officers with a support staff of 8 (including 5 dispatchers, Community Service Officer, Records & Admin Asst). The Department runs a secondary PSAP and has a holding facility with 6-cells.
The agency is a multi-year award winner of the AAA Traffic Safety Award for proactive commitment to crash reduction and public education.
Recently the agency created a new Kansas Combined Anti-Drug Taskforce (K-CAT) partnering with the Labette Sheriffs Office and the Labette County Attorney's Office.
Beginning January 1, 2020 the agency will introduce a new retention program to pay monthly incentive pay to Field Training Officers (FTO's), instructors and for special assignments such as our Bike/UTV Unit.
Unlike traditional police departments, PPD is evolving to take on additional responsibilities from traditional 1st responders to crimes and criminal investigation, to emergency management duties, crisis intervention, and we are growing to partner with community agencies and organizations to enhance services to families in crisis, people with mental health problems and at-risk juveniles. Over 10,000 people come to the police front counter every year for help, while our police officers contact over 30,000 citizens every year.
We’re not recruiting for the average. We are recruiting mature individuals who are self-motivated, service-oriented and place helping on par with enforcement.
Currently patrol officers and dispatchers work 12-hour shifts working 15 days a month. In 2019/20, we are investing in our staff with specialized training including Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, active shooter response, crime prevention, Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) certification and 105 hours of (on-line) Sexual Assault Response and Investigation training.
A new Bicycle / UTV Officer option is being rolled out that would include being assigned a mountain bicycle, and access to UTV units as a supplemental assignment to regular patrol duties.
We hope to develop a Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program in 2020 that will support our Investigations Unit in a new Police Annex Facility. These volunteers will assist detectives in working with crime victims, juveniles in crisis and to provide front counter support for investigators.

Police officers enter the pay scale with credit given for their prior police officer experience.
Recruit officers starting wage $16.04 per hour
Lateral Transfer officer wage $16.04 – $19.83 and is negotiable based on training and years of experience.
Incentive pay for instructors, Field Training Officers (FTO) and Special Assignments such as our Bicycle / ATV Unit.
12 hour shifts for at total of 2223 annual work hours.
High School diploma or GED (Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred), no felony or domestic violence convictions, good driving record. KLETC certification or equivalent from another State is preferred. Out of area candidates can have their written test and oral board conducted on the same day. Candidates must also pass the background check, physical, drug screen, and psychological exam, physical agility and polygraph may also be administered.
